Before you begin to learn to drive, on public roads in Ireland, you must hold a learner permit, for the category of vehicle you wish to drive (see car categories below). In order to obtain the Learner Permit you must pass the Theory Test. Having passed the Theory Test you will be given a certificate, which you should send to the relevant Authority, your permit will then be issued to you.

Categories and Minimum Age

  • Category B  - Minimum Age 17 years. Vehicles with seats for up to 8 passengers and a maximum weight of 3,500kg.
  • Category W  - Minimum Age 16 years. Work vehicles with or without a trailer, such as a land tractor or JCB
